So if you are driving to the grocery store, and halfway there you realize you forgot your reusable shopping bags at home, is it better for the environment to: a) Turn around and drive back to the house to get them, burning extra fossil fuels in the process, or b) Continue on to the store and get plastic bags, which will not biodegrade in our lifetime?

I have had the same problem many times. I will often buy another bag or two as pennance for my forgetfulness. This can only work for so many trips because now I have 8 of the darn things. Another thing we do is to empty the groceries, then immediately put the bags back in the car for next time.
As for ice yachting, I prefer the kind that involves a bikini and a cool drink...
